One Rat Terrier is even reported to have killed over 2,500 rats in a span of just 7 hours, that's one rat every 10.8 seconds.
As the name would suggest, these athletically built, short-coated dogs were specifically created to do one very important thing: kill rats.
In the early days of colonizing the land that would become the United States of America, losing the year's grain harvest was practically a death sentence. Rats, mice, and other vermin were not merely an inconvenience but an active threat. So people did what they have done for thousands of years, they turned to dogs for help.
Using the dogs available at the time, farmers mixed together a variety of breeds, including Smooth Fox Terriers, Old English White Terriers, Bull Terriers, Manchester Terriers, and Feists type dogs to create one of the finest rat hunting breeds.
